What is the St Joseph the Carpenter Youth Program?
St Joe’s has been providing respite and recreation for vulnerable Canberra children aged 6 to 15 since 1978. Holiday camps and weekend activities provide children experiencing financial or social disadvantage with experiences that other families take for granted. Weekend activity days aim to provide children with an opportunity to experience recreational activities they would otherwise miss out on, such as visits to the Zoo and Questacon, or adventure activities like rock climbing. Camps are run during every school holiday period with two camps running in January. Activities on camp include art, sport, bushwalking, games, swimming, cooking and life skills.
What is the cost of this service?
St Joe’s is a free of charge program.
Who can access this service?
Vulnerable children aged 6-12 years in the Canberra region. The program is aimed at children experiencing social or financial disadvantage. For more information of eligibility please contact us.
Where is the service located?
The camps and activities take place around Canberra and the surrounding region. Weekend activities include trips to the Zoo and Questacon or outdoor activities like rock climbing. Camps are held at retreat and recreation centres in dorm style accommodation.
What are the benefits of accessing this service?
The camp program focuses on building the child’s self-esteem, social confidence and improving teamwork and leadership skills. For some children these camps are their only chance for a holiday during the year. Camps also offer children a chance to have a break from their home situation and to have a fun and memorable experience in their school holidays.
Can I volunteer for this service?
Yes, we are always looking for more volunteers. This program is staffed, planned and facilitated by volunteers aged 17 years and older. Volunteers must have a current Working with Vulnerable Person’s Check and undergo reference checks and regular training.
